Osteopathy offers gentle and effective treatment during pregnancy. It is safe at any stage through your pregnancy, but for ‘piece of mind’ we usually recommend waiting till after 12 weeks. Pregnancy postural aches and pains most commonly start from 20 weeks.
During pregnancy your body goes through enormous physical, chemical and emotional changes over a relatively short period of time. Your body has to accommodate and change in order to carry up to 20lb/10kg of baby, waters and placenta, which can impose great physical strain on your organs, tissues, joints and ligaments. Your body therefore needs to find new ways to walk, sit and sleep resulting in new aches and pains arising.
The most common complaints treated by Osteopaths are:
- Lower Back pain
- Pelvic Girdle pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Upper back and rib pain.
How does osteopathy compliment your pregnancy?
We aim to assist the natural process of pregnancy and birth by helping your body adapt and align as your pregnancy progresses. Osteopathic treatment achieves this by using safe and efficient techniques, while making sure the mother is comfortable at all times. Osteopathy can help prepare your pelvis for childbirth allowing for efficient descent of your baby through the birth canal, it does this by aligning your body so that your pelvis and lower back mechanics are in the best possible position with as little tension or restriction as possible.
Osteopathic treatment can help maximise your body’s ability to change and support you and your baby with minimum pain and discomfort.
Can osteopathy help post-natally?
Sometimes labour and delivery can leave the mother with a wide range of issues postnatally. Osteopathic treatment can help restore and maintain normal pelvic alignment and mobility. If you have unresolved childbirth stresses from labour, these can contribute to ongoing back problems plus stress incontinence.
Osteopathy is safe and gentle for both mother and baby. Carefully selected techniques relevant to the patient are used to minimise any discomfort or risk.
